Ruth (Prentice) MacFarlane 1st December 2022

I met Alice when she came to Rustenburg Girls' School in Cape Town, in Standard Six. I don't recall much of those school years, but it was a great surprise and pleasure to find her in the same res at Rhodes University.... and even assigned a room on the same floor! We survived 3 years in res, but moved out in the 4th year of her Fine Arts degree and my B.A. Honours year. We thought we were"the bees' knees" living in our tiny cottage on the High Road in Grahamstown. And then she met Peter... an Englishman having an adventure, teaching in South Africa. Peter became our protector when he built a sturdy gate in the backyard, to keep us safe when we had to cross the yard to the shared bathroom, especially at night. How romantic.... and brave.... and determined... they were to be married and she to leave all she had known to go to England. Seeing the pictures reminds me of how vibrant, talented and passionate she was, whether relating to family, making a garden or having an adventure somewhere. She was a bright light.
