There are so many golden moments spanning a deep friendship of over 30 years from battling baboons in the Cape, admiring renaissance frescoes in Assisi, collecting elderflower blossoms and figs from precipitous slopes, to those treasured conversations on balconies and beaches. With all these came that wonderful, vital, affectionate and creative spirit. On meeting, it was the joy of Alice's welcome which made one feel loved, special, safe. The twinkle in the eye, the infectious smile, the roars of laughter, she brought light into our lives and memories I shall treasure for ever. She was always genuinely interested and freely gave of her time to listen unconditionally to the joys and woes of family life, always positive and encouraging, perceptive in her observations and wise in council. Alice was the rock in so many of our lives. Her zest for life was infectious. Her boundless energy channelled inspirationally into numerous creative projects, a skilled seamstress, she fashioned clothes, experimented with dyes, made complex patchwork bedspreads and more. The quality of her many mosaics complimented the home and beloved garden she created with Peter, with her unerring sense of style, colour and form. The home made bread, the apricot and almond jam, those well observed and sensitive sketches - all part of the richest of tapestries. It was a huge privilege to share a small part of Alice and Peter's long and happy retirement. It was relationship to aspire to, a match surely made in heaven. She was an elegant and a beautiful lady in every sense of the word. Dear Alice.
